"A Tale of Two Cities" written by Charles Dicken
Book Review: A Tale of Two Cities is a historical fiction novel set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel depicts the narrative of two men, Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton, who are similar in appearance but not in character, and who are both in love with the same woman. Darnay, who has fled to London to escape the harshness of the French nobles, must return to Paris to save his servant from death during the French Revolution. However, he endangers his own life in the process and is captured. Carton might be able to assist, but will his likeness be enough to save Darnay's life?
The novel also chronicles the story of Doctor Manette, who spent 18 years in the Bastille in Paris before being released to live in London with his daughter Lucie (named after her mother Lucie), whom he had never met. The story is set against the conditions that led up to the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror.
Dickens' writing style reflects the reality of everyday life. For example, every scene in the book is crucial to the plot, even if the reader can't figure out how it all fits together for the first half of the book. However, as everything is revealed at the conclusion, the reader may look back and see the purpose of each scene. Similarly, as we go through life, we rarely realize the significance of the numerous scenes we encounter.
If you enjoy Dickens' writings and want to read a fiction novel, this is a must-read.
